When you’re networking and/or prospecting do you find it hard to approach people you don’t know and start a conversation?
Aside from some level of being shy, which is only natural, you’ll do better if you’ve PREPARED an honest, enticing “opening”
to break the ice ahead of time!
It doesn’t help if you ARE a bit nervous and then spend precious seconds ALSO trying to figure out exactly what you want to say or where to start, right?
Simply add any one of these 3 ‘Starters’ to what you usually say and you’re more likely to engage almost anyone successfully.
1 – “Hello. I was wondering if you could help me…?
2 – “Hi. I’m here today hoping to get a few opinions about _______. What are your thoughts?”
3 – “Excuse me. I’m new here and was curious to know ..?”
BONUS 4 – “Do you know anyone who’d be interested getting a free _________, as I’m doing a beta program to ________?”
Try these on for size whether you’re on the phone, online or shaking hands at an event. You can use them individually or tie them together, e.g.
“Hello. I’m here today hoping to get a few opinions about ____________ and was wondering if you could help me?”
Most people are polite and have been brought up (trained) to help those in need of assistance so POSITION yourself that way.
- “Compliment them on something they are wearing or carrying”.
- “Ask for directions”.
- “Ask what they do for a living”.
- “Carry a book on Success or Leadership and casually ask people if they have read it”.
- “Ask for their name after giving yours”.
***“Hi, my name is Shannon. How are you? I apologize for asking this, what is your name? I have never had the pleasure of meeting you.”
